The Workout Week Protective Style Playbook
For textured and curly hair, the workout-week math is brutal: five sweat sessions versus a wash-day routine that takes three hours. Protective styles are the treaty — install once, train all week, protect the hair underneath. Here is the sweat-season playbook.

The Style Rankings
Box braids and twists: the training champions (sweat-proof, week-plus longevity, zero mid-workout maintenance). Cornrows: flat under helmets and headbands. The low braided bun: the two-day quick installer. Wash-and-go: honorable but sweat-fragile — save it for rest days.
The Scalp Care Under
Protected hair still has a scalp doing cardio: dilute witch-hazel or scalp-refresh sprays post-workout, a real cleanse when buildup announces itself, and moisture (light oils on the braid line) since styles wick it away. Protection without scalp care is just hiding the problem.

The Sweat Management
A moisture-wicking headband under the hairline catches the workout’s worst, cool-air drying at the roots post-session (the locker-room dryer’s cool button exists for this), and never wrapping wet roots under a scarf — trapped damp is the style-killer.
The Install Timing
Install styles on rest days (fresh braids plus immediate sweat is asking a lot of new parts), keep tension humane — training headaches from tight braids are a hard no and an edges tax — and give hair breather weeks between installs. The style protects the hair; the schedule protects the style.
Braids for the heavy weeks, scalp care underneath, wicking headbands, humane tension. The three-hour wash day and the five-day training week were never enemies — they just needed a treaty with good installation timing.
